DESIGNING CRAFT, CRAFTING DESIGN
Royal College of Art (RCA) London / Werkraum Bregenzerwald / Diaméter
Following the premier at Vienna Design Week 2017 the exhibition Designing Craft, Crafting Design, a collaborative project of the Royal College of Art (RCA) London with Werkraum Bregenzerwald and the design collective diaméter will be presented by invitation of the Arts & Crafts Fair at the MKG – Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg.
The exhibition DESIGNING CRAFT, CRAFTING DESIGN explores the collaborative
relationship between craftsperson and designer. Under the guidance of the
design collective diaméter, students of the RCA have been urged to reflect upon
their position as designers in an urban context as well as in relation to and in
contrast with the practices of their collaborators at Werkraum Bregenzerwald,
who preserve certain working traditions within a regional craft community. The
intersection of these young designers and master craftspeople is told through a
journey-led exhibition, depicted through three thematic stages: material
culture of Bregenzerwald, visibility and invisibility of craft, and
recontextualizing and reimagining materials and practices.
Acting as research laboratory were the workshops of Felder Metall, Mohr
Polster, Tischlerei Bereuter, Oberhauser & Schedler Bau, Strolz Leuchten,
Kunstschmiede Figer and Schwarzmann Fenster und Türen aus Holz.
